Easy A to Z Guide for Helping Anxious Kids Cope with Tragedy

Sometimes you just wish someone would write up an easy-to-follow, quick yet comprehensive list of things you can do to help your anxious kid cope with a tragedy. Well, someone has. That someone is psychologist and author Barbara Markway, Ph.D.

The most recent tragedy that comes to mind is the Connecticut elementary school shooting, although Markway’s alphabetic rundown can work in the wake of any traumatic situation. Her list also has the added bonus of offering tips parents can use for themselves as well as with their anxious children.

While the entire list is definitely worth reading, we’ve picked out three of our favorite tips, listed here (in alphabetical order, of course):

Love – Tell your children, “I love you.” Tell them often.

Reassure – If you’re faced with a question you can’t answer, remember the most important thing you can do is reassure your children that you will do everything possible to keep them safe.

Zzzz – Prolonged stress suppresses the immune system, leading to greater susceptibility to illness. Make sure you and your children get plenty of rest. Make time to exercise and remember to eat well.

You already have three down, which only leaves 23 more quick and sensible tips to go. All 26 are worthwhile as guidelines to help your anxious child deal with the added anxiety any tragedy can bring.
